Going into deadline day, it had looked like Celtic wanted to sign two strikers. But they were then turned down by both Kasper Dolberg and David Datro Fofana, leaving them empty-handed at the end of the window. Eventually, the Hoops did sign Kelechi Iheanacho, who was released by Sevilla recently. But is that enough?
Iheanacho played his best football under the management of Brendan Rodgers and the hope is that the Northern Irishman will be able to repeat the trick. But considering the Nigerian striker's lack of form, perhaps it is worth having an eye on another option up top as well.
With the transfer window closed, Celtic can sign only free agents. There are still a few intriguing ones available though.
And it looks like the Hoops are well-placed to sign one such name. As reported by Claret & Hugh, Celtic are favourites to land the signature of Michail Antonio for nothing.
Celtic named favourites to sign free agent striker
Antonio is a West Ham United legend. He spent a decade with the club and is their record goalscorer in the Premier League, with 68 goals to his name.
At 35 years of age, he is coming off an injury though. So, there are questions about whether he will ever be able to perform at a high level again. He has represented Jamaica over the summer and even featured for the West Ham U21 team recently as he looks to regain his fitness.
Of course, any move from Celtic would come with a fair share of risk. There is no doubt about that. But then again, it might be one worth taking. Antonio was a handful for every Premier League defence during his prime and if he reproduces that form at Parkhead, he would be an asset for Rodgers' side.
