It is pretty clear that Brendan Rodgers was not happy with the Celtic squad he had, going into the UEFA Champions League qualifier play-off. And what we got was an uninspired 0-0 draw at home against Kairat Almaty. For the visitors, this was as good as a win as the Hoops will now have to head to Kazakhstan and get a result.
We all know about Celtic's track record in away European games. Also, one cannot forget how many years on the trot they failed to qualify for the Champions League, before getting a guaranteed spot three seasons in a row as Scottish champions.
All things considered, this feels like a movie that we have seen before. On repeat, more times than anybody wanted. And there is a feeling of inevitability about this second leg against Kairat Almaty, who now have to be considered favourites to go through.
As for Celtic, if they are to have any hope of getting a result, they will need to make some changes in the second leg. And two players must be dropped.
Celtic must drop two players in second leg vs Kairat
The first name won't surprise anybody. It is Adam Idah. Now, we do believe that the Irishman can contribute to this team. He scored 20 goals last season after all. That being said, things are not falling in place for him right now.
When it comes to strikers, a lot depends on confidence. And right now, Idah seems devoid of any. Starting him every game, and his failing to score, is not going to help. He needs some time out of the starting XI.
The second name is that of James Forrest. A club legend without a doubt. But at this point in his career, he should not be starting Champions League games. Yang Hyun-jun has his fair share of critics and for good reason, but when he came on, it at least felt like he could make something happen.
