Brendan Rodgers has made it abundantly clear that he expects Celtic to strengthen their squad. Now, it remains to be seen if the board back him up. With less than a year left on the Northern Irishman's contract, the club certainly are not doing their best at the moment to convince him that Parkhead is the place to be. But there is still time and some pretty good options available.
The midfield is one area where Celtic could look to strengthen further. They have been linked with plenty of players, on and off, over the past few months.
One of those names has been that of Christian Eriksen, going back to the winter transfer window. But if Celtic want to make something happen, they might need to move quickly.
As reported by Sky Sports, Wrexham have made an approach to sign Eriksen and have held talks with the player. The 33-year-old free agent, who left Manchester United this summer, is said to still prefer a move to a top-flight club, but has been impressed by the pitch and ambition of the Championship club.
Celtic must move quick after late-night Sky Sports transfer news
Celtic have brought in quite a few Premier League veterans in recent years to great success. Joe Hart, Aaron Mooy and Kasper Schmeichel are names that belong in that category. Why not add Eriksen to that list?
If Wrexham are being considered a realistic destination for Eriksen, Celtic must be as well. It is just about showing ambition. The Hoops can offer him the chance to compete for trophies every season and also play at the Champions League level. There's not a lot more the Danish legend can ask at this point in his career.
Yes, Eriksen is 33 years of age. But it is almost guaranteed that he would improve this Celtic team immediately. On top of everything else, he is available as a free agent.
Of course, the Hoops will need to go out and try to sign him first. It is worth remembering that while those rumours were pretty heavy at one point, they have faded away in recent times.
