It looks like midfield is an area where Celtic could be looking to strengthen in January despite their pre-existing depth in the middle of the park. The club already have Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, Paulo Bernardo and Odin Thiago Holm. Yet, some of the recent underwhelming performances have perhaps convinced them that there is a need to get better there.

Celtic have already been linked with Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall of Chelsea. Now, it looks like they have a West Ham United player on their radar as well.

As reported by The Athletic, Andy Irving could leave in January. The midfielder has interest from Celtic.

Irving shined away on loan last season. But now back at West Ham United, he has not gotten the chances that he would have been hoping for, only making six appearances so far in the ongoing campaign. So, it might be the best step for all parties involved to part ways, whether it be on loan or on a permanent basis.

Of course, Irving is no stranger to the Scottish game. He came through the ranks and played his early senior-level football for Hearts. He also spent time on loan at Falkirk and has represented Scotland at youth international levels.

Irving is not the type of headline signing that Celtic fans would be hoping for. Especially since they have also been linked with Christian Eriksen of Manchester United.

But it would be wrong to write anyone off before they have played for the club. The fit is also very important. Just look at how good Jota was for Celtic and then compare it to his stints at other clubs. You never know how it will work out. So, we can only wait and see what unfolds.
