Celtic legend Scott Brown has left Ayr United by mutual agreement, after his team dropped to eighth place in the Scottish Championship.
On Friday, Brown's Ayr side lost to Raith Rovers. It was a 3-0 loss, but people were more concerned by the fact that the result extended their winless run to eight games.
People were calling for Brown's head after the loss, but the club chose to wait to confirm their decision.
In a statement by the Somerset Park side released on Monday, they said: "Ayr United confirms that Scott Brown and Steven Whittaker have left the club by mutual consent.
"The club wishes to thank them both for their dedication throughout their time at Ayr United and wish them every success for their future careers.
"Training today will be taken by Jamie Murphy, Tommy Tait and Dave Timmins and there will be a further communication regarding an interim position in due course."
Brown has been at Ayr since January 2024, where he joined with assistant manager Steven Whittaker, who was also given the sack this week. In his first full season, he took Ayr to a third-place finish, but they ended up losing to Partick Thistle in the play-offs.
Now, supporters will eagerly await the announcement of where he will go next, but as you can expect, there has been a lot of talk on social media about him potentially returning to Parkhead.
Scott Brown to Celtic?
Celtic are set to appoint a new manager in the summer as Martin O'Neill will finish up his term. There have already been three managers in charge this season - O'Neill, Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy - and everyone will be hoping that next season has a lot less turmoil.
With the Celtic legend now out of a job, there will be a lot of talk of him coming back to the Hoops in a managerial role. That is incredibly unlikely, but rumours will also be around.
Right now, Robbie Keane and Jens Berthel Askou lead the race for the Parkhead dugout, with Roberto Martinez also under consideration. One of these three will likely be appointed, so it'll be exciting to see who.
Whoever comes in has a big job on their hands. If the Hoops don't manage to retain their league title this season, which is looking more likely by the day, the next head coach will have an incredibly difficult job on his hands.
Supporters won't accept anything less than a title win next season, so the pressure that comes is going to be intense.
