Celtic are now being linked with a Scottish Premiership left-back as they look to add much-needed competition and support for Kieran Tierney. The Bhoys relied on Marcelo Saracchi to play that role last season, and the Uruguayan certainly played his part, but they passed up on the opportunity to re-sign him permanently this summer.
Saracchi was willing to make the move, but the player's agent says Celtic were not interested and that a move is no longer a possibility. The Hoops could have made that deal happen for a reported £1.5million, but at this point, it's not worth second guessing the club's thinking when it comes to their summer transfer strategy.
Whatever the case, Celtic's search for a new left-back now goes on, and they are said to have identified a possible target within the Scottish Premiership.
Celtic now considering Ferry deal
Celtic are now said to be considering an approach for Dundee United left-back Will Ferry.
Courier Sport have reported that Celtic have watched the 25-year-old on several occasions, though their interest has not gone further than that at this stage.
Celtic scout Tosh McKinlay is said to have personally scouted Ferry on a number of occasions, and thanks to a broken down move, the Bhoys know how much a deal will cost.
An unnamed Czech club are said to have agreed a £1.7million deal with Dundee Utd, but the defender did not want to make the move. Meanwhile, an MLS and a Championship side are said to be interested in a deal.
Ferry came through Southampton's academy but never made it at the English club, going on to spend time at Cheltenham Town, and he has since made 68 league appearances for United, picking up plenty of Premiership experience.
That could be attractive to Celtic, who will want to sign a left-back who doesn't need time to adjust if they can help it. Ferry is actually a Republic of Ireland international having won his first cap this year.
Dundee United boss Jim Goodwin has previously labelled Ferry as 'one of the best signings this club has made for a number of years.' He said: “Will has been one of the best signings this club has made for a number of years. He’s robust in defensive scenarios and his impact in the final third is invaluable. He’s like a Duracell Bunny tearing up and down the flank every week.”
