Celtic have a lot of options in the middle of the park right now. But that does not mean that they do not keep an eye on midfielders with the future in mind. Odin Thiago Holm is someone who could potentially leave soon, having failed to make his mark at Parkhead. On the other hand, Reo Hatate is another player who has been linked with a move away over the years.
So, Celtic need to be ready in case players end up leaving. And it looks like they have a Championship standout in their sights.
As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Josh Brownhill has been tentatively spoken about within the Celtic Park corridors. Other clubs are believed to hold interest in the Burnley midfielder as well.
Brownhill's current contract at Burnley is believed to be running out next summer. So, he could be available on a bargain deal in January and would also be free to sign a pre-contract agreement.
Celtic interested in signing £5 million Burnley captain
Brownhill is the current captain of Burnley and he is leading from the front as well. The midfielder has scored 5 goals as the club are very much in the promotion race at this point in the season. They sit at fourth in the table.
Of course, Brownhill might prefer to wait and see how the season turns out for Burnley, rather than rushing into any decision regarding his future. If they manage to win promotion to the Premier League, that would only increase his chances of signing an extension with the club.
It remains to be seen how things play out. It would not be like Celtic to sign a veteran midfielder. The club have focused on bringing in youngsters in recent years. But if he is available as a free agent, that would be a good deal.
