Celtic are still holding firm over the potential sale of full-back Alistair Johnston this summer. The Hoops are desperate to keep hold of the Canadian, who is one of the most reliable full-backs in the country.
Johnston struggled with injury last season but he came back to play a vital role in the final phase, helping Celtic win the league and cup. He then went on to dazzle for Canada as they reached the World Cup Round of 16.
Premier League interest has followed, and it looks as though Everton are going to keep up their efforts to sign him until a deal is agreed.
Everton still have work to do
There have been some reports that Everton are closing in on a £15million deal, but the Liverpool Echo have now reported that the Toffees still have 'significant' work to do until they can agree a deal.
The interest is not in doubt, with Martin O'Neill confirming he has heard personally from David Moyes in the last week or so. He also added: "I've spoken to him (Johnston) on the back of the interest. Again, it was one of those where Alistair is perfectly happy here at the football club.
"But like anything else, your head can get turned very quickly, particularly if it's a really good club. He wouldn't leave here for a second-class Premier League club, if there is such a thing, but if a big, big club comes in, it's something you would have to look at."
But Celtic are desperate to keep Johnston, already needing to sign a left-back and having big holes elsewhere in their squad to address.
Arne Engels is going to need to be replaced, and a replacement for Daizen Maeda has not yet been sourced. Losing Johnston on top of the existing needs would be a huge blow, and we only have a month to go in the summer window.
Celtic likely value Johnston at £20million or above, and given the difficulties a sale would create, one would hope the Hoops stand firm by that valuation.
The club have been understanding in granting Maeda, Engels and Hatate moves at the right prices this summer, but they are going to have to draw a line at Johnston, who should be told to wait until next summer to get his move.
In any case, it looks as though it will come down to Everton and how much they are willing to offer.
