Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Mick Beale were shown the Ibrox exit door while the Rangers were in much better shape. The club decided to stick with Philippe Clement far longer than anybody could have expected. Surely after the defeat to Queen's Park he would be sacked, but he was not. Now though, the Belgian's run in Glasgow has come to an end. The news has been officially announced and Celtic hero, Chris Sutton, was quick to react.
Of course, Sutton is a former Celtic striker. He remains popular amongst the Hoops supporters for his work in the media these days.
Whenever something major happens at either of the two Glasgow clubs, there are many Celtic fans who look out for Sutton's thoughts on the matter. And he was pretty clear that the Rangers had let Clement's run as manager drag on for far too long.
In fact, Sutton felt that Clement should have been gone in late October when the Rangers lost to Aberdeen. That was four months ago. But the Ibrox club did not make the change and the results are here for everybody to see.
Celtic hero Chris Sutton's immediate reaction to Philippe Clement sacking
Reacting to the news of Clement's sacking as Rangers manager, Sutton tweeted out:
"On October 30 after the defeat to Aberdeen myself and Kris Boyd said it was time for Big Phil to go. The Rangers board didn’t listen…He seemed to be a decent man but didn’t understand the demands of football in Glasgow. Another Rangers manager seen off by Brendan Rodgers…"
Clement's time as Rangers manager had started brilliantly. Not only did he win the League Cup last season but he was also successful in closing down a significant gap in the points table.
That feels like a lifetime ago though. Other than the 3-0 Glasgow Derby win at Ibrox earlier in the year, Clement's side had not delivered many positive results in recent times. Now, they find themselves looking for a new manager, again. On the other hand, Celtic won the double last season and look on course for the treble this time around.
