It is always sad to see Celtic heroes say goodbye to the game of football. Now, one more name has been added to that list. It is that of Aiden McGeady. The 38-year-old has decided to announce his retirement from the game, having enjoyed a career that lasted over two decades and saw him play all over Europe.

McGeady's youth career began at Queen's Park but he would soon make the move to Celtic. He spent quite a few years at the club's academy before finally getting the call up to the senior team.

McGeady's talent was clear from the get-go. He scored on his debut against Hearts and never looked back. Very soon, he was playing consistent senior football for Celtic.

McGeady would go on to establish himself as a key part of Celtic's team. He made over 250 appearances for the club, won seven trophies and at his peak, was the best player in Scotland.

McGeady left Celtic in 2010 for a transfer fee in the region of £9.5 million, which made him the most expensive signing from Scottish football. After that, he played for several clubs in England, including Everton and Sunderland.

McGeady would end up returning to Scotland in the twilight of his career. His last two spells came at Hibernian and Ayr United before retiring.

McGeady enjoyed a long career at the international level as well. He made 93 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team in a run that started in 2004 and ended in 2017.

At his best, McGeady was one of Celtic's best players. There was speculation of a return to Parkhead on numerous occasions but unfortunately, it never materialised. We would like to wish him the best in the next chapter of his life and thank him for the memories.
