Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has dubbed Parkhead a 'cesspit' amid the discord between the club and its fans.
Amid the Dermot Desmond golf protest over the weekend, things are not going well at Celtic currently. The performances on the pitch have not helped, with the Hoops losing three on the bounce before the international break.
But fans have been unhappy with how the club is being run for some time, and starved of communication with those who run the club, the frustration has been growing with every passing day.
But the frustration from the fans and the hard-nosed approach from the board is only adding further challenges to matters on the pitch, and the atmosphere is not a good one currently.
That's something Sutton has highlighted on The Warm-Up. He said: “I'm concerned about the comments because it just it just leaves everything up in the air. Celtic at this moment in time is a bit of a cesspit, and when you sort of put everything in the mix and all the mud flying around.
“Then even the stuff in the weekend with the Celtic fanbase and Dermot Desmond. Martin took over a really difficult situation last season on, you know, on a couple of occasions. I think this season could be, you know, even more fraught in terms of him carrying on because, you know, the mood of the club, it feels like a broken club at this moment in time.
“On the face of things Celtic are top of the league. I don't think Martin necessarily helped himself by what he said about that doubt thing. Martin's a totally different animal to me. If it was me, I'd just think that it would be a good time for him to actually walk away just because of the nature of everything which has gone on. I don't think he will. I think had he done so, it would have been sort of more in the immediacy after what he said, in the in the days after that.
“I think he'll carry on. He's a warrior and last season, what he achieved, I think people have forgotten that. They can't forget it but the nature of managing Celtic or Rangers means it does get sort of forgotten. I just hope he's alright because his health, you know, it hasn't been the best. At times he's looked really tired.
“I think Martin will tell you that he can look after himself and that's the biggest thing. If he feels he has the energy to carry on, then of course everybody will back him and what have you. I think the longer the break has gone on, I suspect that he will carry on. Otherwise we would have heard about that now.
“What I don't like is the whole atmosphere at Celtic. With all the mud being chucked around, I don't necessarily think he deserves it. In truth, I don't see things getting better, when you have one arm of the support on one end and the board at the other end. The anger between the pair is getting bigger. I don't see that being resolved.”
Sutton has a valid point, and we highlighted this week that the fans still need to play their part in willing this side back to success. But they cannot be asked to simply shelve their frustrations with the board, that's what the board want.
Both sides need to find a compromise that works, and if they don't, this situation is only going to become more rotten.
