Celtic are said to be pushing to sign Las Palmas goalkeeper Dinko Horkas this summer, and a new update has emerged from the Canary Islands. The Bhoys are still searching for their second signing of the summer after signing Camilo Duran a couple of weeks ago.
Martin O'Neill is desperate for more signings, and he is doing his best to defend the board, but in doing so, he is perhaps risking losing some of his own good faith with fans at this point, given the level of frustration among the supporters.
One of the positions the Bhoys need to address is the goalkeeper position following the retirement of Kasper Schmeichel, and it seems there is one clear target as things stand.
Horkas remains Celtic's goalkeeping priority
Las Palmas goalkeeper Horkas is clearly Celtic's main goalkeeping target this summer. The Croatian played a key role in the Canaries side reaching the Segunda playoffs last season, and he now looks set to move on for a solid fee.
Horkas will reportedly cost somewhere between £4million and £6million, and there has been talk of Celtic submitting a bid, but it doesn't appear as though that is the case.
According to La Provincia, no bid has been received yet, but Celtic are showing the most serious interest, with Torino and Olympiacos also interested. New Premier League side Hull City were said to be interested after they sold Ivor Pandur to Rangers for £6million, but the report claims the Tigers have walked away from any potential Horkas deal.
Horkas is set to link up with his teammates for pre-season today, but he knows his future is up in the air and that Las Palmas will likely sell if they receive a good bid this summer. Missing out on promotion was a big blow for the Canaries side, and they will need to balance the books as a result.
It will be interesting to see whether Celtic now push ahead with their interest, and whether they can convince Horkas to make the move, given the struggles they have had in convincing their targets to join.
Along with the promise of European football, Celtic will likely offer a number one spot to Horkas, with O'Neill clearly wanting a new number one despite relying on Viljami Sinisalo at times during Schmeichel's injury absences last summer.
But Celtic are going to need to submit a bid, and they could do with getting their goalkeeper in place sharpish with the new season fast-approaching.
