Time flies in football. We are about a month-and-a-half away from the January transfer window. And while there has been a lot of talk around the managerial situation at Celtic, it will be just as important to bring in quality players. On the other hand, it looks like one of their former players could be on the move, which could hand the club a cash boost, even though a lack of funds is not what has been stopping them from making additions.
In the summer, there had been some rumours about Celtic bringing back Kristoffer Ajer, after Kieran Tierney made his return to Parkhead. That did not happen. But it looks like a winter exit from Brentford could be on the cards for the Norwegian defender.
As reported by Sky Sports, Wolfsburg had a £13 million bid rejected by Brentford for Ajer towards the end of the summer window. The Bundesliga club are targeting a deal for him in January.
Ajer had left Celtic in the summer of 2021, joining Brentford. Since then, he has played his part for the Bees. Could Germany be his next destination? And one would imagine that the Hoops would have included a sell-on clause in the deal, like they usually seem to do.
Celtic handed boost by £13 million-plus transfer news
Since the departure of Thomas Frank as manager, there have been question marks around Ajer's place at Brentford. At the start of the season, he was not getting much playing time. But in recent weeks, he has been getting consistent starts once again.
So, it is unclear whether the club would be open to the idea of Ajer leaving or not. If they are, there could be a chance for Celtic to land another sell-on fee.
Of course, that will only matter if the club end up reinvesting these fees into rebuilding the squad. All we can do is hope for the best.
