It is safe to say that even the most optimistic of Celtic fans could not have predicted how Russell Martin's run as the manager of the Rangers would play out. The 49ers era was tipped to be the beginning of something special for the Ibrox club. Instead, it has proven to be a nightmare so far. And it remains to be seen if they can find a fix.
Martin's side just won one of their seven league games. They were handed a 9-1 defeat in the Champions League qualifier against Club Brugge and then lost both of their Europa League matches so far. And after a 123-day run, Martin was shown the exit door by the Ibrox club.
There is a good chance that he will go down as the worst manager in the history of the Rangers. He is most certainly in that conversation. There is no doubt about that.
Now, it is about the Rangers finding an answer to their problems. Who will they replace Martin with? Kris Boyd seems to have a few suggestions. As reported by Sky Sports, he said:
"Steven Gerrard's a name that's never gone away.
"Frank Lampard's name was another one that was mentioned. I know he's doing some wonderful things at Coventry City, but is that out of the equation now?
"The obvious one for me would be Sean Dyche. Kevin Thelwell worked with him in the past, and he seems to have a lot of say in the players that are coming in."
Celtic fans will love who Kris Boyd wants next Rangers manager to be
To be very honest, Celtic should not be worried about any of those three if they were brought in by the Rangers. And for different reasons.
We have already seen what Gerrard can do. Yes, he did win the league with the Rangers. But that was his only title in over three years at Ibrox.
Lampard has done a fantastic job lately. But then again, we have seen him fail at top clubs as well. And there is no reason to believe that Dyche would be able to deliver in these circumstances.
