Celtic fans would have been hoping for the club to go out and sign a proven and experienced centre-back this summer. Instead, the Hoops have brought in 19-year-old Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from Manchester City. Before arriving at Parkhead, he has made just six senior appearances for Pep Guardiola's side.
Of course, that does not mean that it won't work out for Simpson-Pusey. Just look at how things have gone for a certain Jeremie Frimpong, who now finds himself at Liverpool. Celtic will be hoping that their new centre-back is that level of talent.
It is a straight and dry loan deal though. There is no clause included in it. So, whether Simpson-Pusey does well or not, he will be heading back to Manchester City at the end of the campaign.
That does not mean that it does not matter for Celtic. They'll be hoping he proves himself as one of the brightest young defenders in world football. And some of Guardiola's comments about the cente-back will raise those hopes.
Celtic fans will love what Pep Guardiola said about Jahmai Simpson-Pusey
As reported by the Daily Record, Guardiola had said about Simpson-Pusey after one of Manchester City's games:
"Jahmai Simpson-Pusey played really good again, with this composure – the duels, everything was good. We have a central defender to help us for the next years.
“I’m really pleased. Always, there is good news when a situation is going bad – and this is one of them. It’s not easy for him.
“Normally, the young lads come in with the support of the team – Rodri in front of them, the best Kyle Walker and other defenders. He’s playing in a position that is difficult for him, and he performed unbelievably."
It would be safe to say that not everybody gets that kind of praise from a manager like Guardiola. There is zero doubt that Celtic have brought in an elite talent here.
There is a difference between having talent and showcasing it when playing amongst proven professionals though. That is what Simpson-Pusey will be expected to do this season.
It will be interesting to see what kind of role Brendan Rodgers is envisioning for him. Will he be a starter straight off the bat or just a squad option at first?
