Ben Doak left Celtic in 2022, after making only two senior appearances for his boyhood club. He was 16 but clearly the level of talent that deserved special attention. Unfortunately, he decided to swap Parkhead for Anfield. In the three years that have followed, he has only made 10 appearances for Liverpool.
Not only did Liverpool sign one of Celtic's best talents in recent memory but they got him for a £600,000 compensation clause as well. And while it has not worked out as expected at Anfield, it will still go down as one of the Reds' best deals ever.
Why? Bournemouth are set to pay a £25 million transfer fee to sign Doak from Liverpool this summer. It is believed that a medical has already been completed.
There is an unexpected twist in the tale as well. For all this time, it had been believed that Celtic did not hold any sell-on clause in the Doak deal with Liverpool. So, they were not going to pocket a penny, even though he is on the verge of making a £25 million move to Bournemouth. But now, it appears that that might not be accurate.
Celtic fans will love unexpected Ben Doak transfer twist
As reported by The Scottish Sun, a sell-on clause was in fact inserted into the agreement when the transfer to Liverpool was completed. The percentage amounts to a seven-figure sum for Celtic.
It is safe to say that that is a surprise and an unexpected one for Celtic. Nobody was expected the club to receive any sort of windfall from this Doak deal.
Well, it is very clear that things did not go as Doak would have envisioned when he chose to leave Celtic for Liverpool. Now, we can only wish him the best at Bournemouth, as he heads for a new chapter.
