It is somewhat remarkable that Philippe Clement is still the Rangers manager after overseeing his team's Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Queen's Park last weekend. We have seen the likes of Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Mick Beale be shown the Ibrox exit door when they were in better positions and had better records than the Belgian. Of course, this entire situation works in Celtic's favour, who are well-placed to win another treble.
It is safe to say that the Rangers seem headed towards another trophyless season themselves. Since the League Cup win early on in his run at Ibrox, Clement has not been able to deliver any meaningful success.
The pressure is on Clement to turn things around. And quickly as well, because the Rangers fanbase seems to have given up on this entire situation already.
As reported by The Scottish Sun, Clement said:
"It has been a long week, very long week compared to all the rest.
"After a defeat like that you want to get a game as fast as possible tor react and do the right things. To give the fans the right things also. It's all week in that sense.
"I spoke to Patrick like I do after every game so nothing special as compared to other weeks.
"Not one manager in the world has guarantees, maybe Guardiola at Man City but he deserves it after all the things he did after a long spell there. That's part of football.
"We spoke about the game and that the result didn't reflect the game also.
"I am not busy with that [whether the board have changed their mind on his future], because the board is a lot of people here at the club who are all over the world."
Celtic fans will love Philippe Clement's comments as Rangers crumble
Of course, Celtic fans will want to see Clement remain the manager of the Rangers for as long as possible. That is because things are clearly not working for the Belgian at Ibrox and the longer that is the case, the better for the Hoops.
As for the Rangers, it is quite confusing why they did not make a decision on the future of Clement following their defeat at the hands of Queen's Park last weekend. Have they decided that it is time to restore some stability in the Ibrox hot seat and that the Belgian is the man to lead the club into the future?
It is very possible that the long-term contract that they handed Clement earlier this season might be the reason why he is still the Rangers manager. Of course, the Ibrox club are not in a great financial position at the moment and cannot afford to change managers every season.
