It was in January that Kyogo left Celtic, passing up on the opportunity to play Champions League knockout football against Bayern Munich, to join Rennes. It is a move that has proven to be one of the worst decisions of his career. Less than six months on and it looks like the Japanese forward is set to be on the move again.
The desire to play at the next World Cup was believed to be the driving factor behind his joining Rennes, a team in a top five European league. But it is hard to imagine that he will be on the Japan squad if the forward spends the majority of his time on the bench or completely out of the matchday squad, which has been the case lately.
Rennes are believed to have shelled out £10 million to sign Kyogo in January. But now, they are ready to let him leave for a fraction of that if reports coming out of France are on the mark.
As reported by L'Equipe (via CeltsAreHere), Kyogo is among those deemed surplus to requirements at Rennes. The French club have pladed a transfer price tag of £5.1 million.
Celtic fans left stunned by how much Rennes want for Kyogo
Let's see what the future holds for Kyogo. It is hard to imagine that he will remain at Rennes beyond this season.
That being said, he has been linked with a variety of clubs over the past few months. So, it is hard to predict where he will end up next.
The latest club to be linked with a strong interest in signing Kyogo are Championship side Birmingham City. But would it be the best idea for him to drop down a level and join a second division English club? It does not feel so.
