After sacking Philippe Clement, the Rangers decided to go ahead with a short-term fix in the form of Barry Ferguson. The former club captain only has managerial experience at lower division teams but it is pretty certain that he won't be in charge beyond this season, as the Ibrox side once again try to find a way to catch up with Celtic.
Steven Gerrard is widely recognised as the favourite to become the next Rangers manager. His first stint is viewed as a success by most of their supporters.
Yes, Gerrard only won one trophy at Ibrox in more than three seasons. But it was the league title. In the process, he also stopped Celtic from winning 10IAR. And that has been the lasting memory of his run with the club, not all the failures that preceded it.
Gerrard is available right now though, after he was shown the exit door by Al-Ettifaq last month. So, why did not the Rangers appoint him immediately? Do they even want him to be their next manager or are their eyes set on somebody else?
Celtic fans will laugh at why Steven Gerrard can't join Rangers
As reported by talkSPORT, Gerrard has been linked with the role. But he would be unlikely to take it before April due to potential tax issues in Saudi Arabia. A move in the summer cannot be ruled out.
It remains to be seen if the Rangers do end up trying to bring back Gerrard in the summer. Kevin Muscat is another manager who is expected to be linked with the role heavily, thanks to the former Ange Postecoglou protege's successes around the world.
As for Celtic, they will not be too worried about who the Rangers end up appointing as their next manager. It always feels like the same story.
