This is a regular feature on the comic book run of stories about the Rangers that keeps Celtic fans in stitches or rolling on the floor laughing. It’s a normal cycle that the Ibrox supporters go through with their players. And now, they seemingly have the next Virgil van Dijk in their ranks. Let's see how that works out.

It is a never-ending cycle. A new player gets signed or gets promoted from the B team, and plays for the Rangers’ first team. He is immediately hailed as world-class, and of being the player to turn around their fortunes.

Then not long after the fans realise the player isn't anywhere near that level. Before long they are back in the reserves, B team, or perhaps released on loan or when their contract expires with no sign of those multiple millions coming in to rescue the bank balance.

There have been many examples over the years. Leon King, Robin Propper, Rabbi Matondo, Jose Cifuentes, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent to name just a few.

Celtic fans will laugh at Rangers 'Van Dijk' claim

The latest comes from comments in an interview with Ross McCausland. He has likened the Rangers' French defender, Clinton Nsiala, to ex-Celtic star Virgil van Dijk. He said:

"Us on the bench watching him were saying he’s like a left-footed Van Dijk."

Nsiala has found his way into the first team recently after a number of injuries at centre-back left manager Philippe Clement little other option. He was signed in the summer from the AC Milan youth squad as a longer-term hopeful.

He may well have some talent but after only a few games it’s a bit strong, to say the least, to offer comparisons with the Liverpool and Netherlands captain. Van Dijk has Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup winners medals in his extensive cabinet. There is no doubting his world-class ability, but for Nsiala there's a long way to go yet and he could do without such comparisons at this stage.
