Former Celtic frontman Chris Sutton has taken a swipe at Danny Rohl after his Rangers exit. The former Sheffield Wednesday boss returned to the Red Bull setup, joining RB Salzburg after a brief spell in charge at Ibrox.
Rohl's Rangers saw the wheels come off during the final portion of the season, quickly falling out of title contention as a consequence, and he leaves Rangers having failed to achieve what he set out to achieve.
The Gers have since appointed Hearts boss Derek McInnes, who was responsible for overseeing a superb Hearts title charge that lasted until the final day of the season, as Celtic know.
Sutton takes Rohl swipe
Speaking on Sky Sports, Sutton took aim at Rohl over his time at Ibrox. He said: "Danny Röhl didn’t have the stomach for it. He walked away or, you know, he’s gone to Salzburg, but Derek stepping in, it’ll be interesting to see how he does."
Asked if he was teasing Rangers fans with the comment, he added: "No, no. I think it’s plain for everybody to see that, you know, when things started to go wrong at the end of the season, I mean, he, you know, he had a lot to say about Celtic and their tactics in Europe.
“And, you know, when it came to the crunch at the end of the season, but they lost four games on the spin and everything sort of changed then. And his, his demeanour changed.
“And I don’t think it was a great surprise to anybody that he ended up leaving. So I think Rangers are better off without him. And, you know, Derek McInnes is a is a good appointment.”
McInnes is a scarier prospect
Most Celtic fans would agree that Rangers' appointment of McInnes is a scarier prospect than the appointment of Rohl ever was. Rohl arrived having done okay at Sheffield Wednesday, but without ever having proven himself at a successful club.
McInnes arrives with clear experience in the Scottish Premiership, and indeed, having led Hearts to within a whisker of the league title against the odds. They gave Celtic all they could handle, and even Hoops fans will agree that things could have been very different had a couple of decisions not gone their way late in the season.
McInnes will also be linking back up with Lawrence Shankland, who also joined Rangers from Hearts this summer.
