Celtic not making the Champions League this season was a major disappointment for the fans, there is no doubt about that. The Hoops could not score in 210 minutes of football against Kairat Almaty and then missed three of their five spot kicks. So, it is hard to claim that they deserved to go through to the opening phase of the competition, to be honest.

There is a Celtic fan favourite who managed to make some Champions League history on the first matchday of the competition this season. Timothy Weah was on the scoresheet for Marseille against Real Madrid.

Of course, Weah was on loan at Celtic during Brendan Rodgers' first spell as manager of the Hoops. And while his stint in Glasgow was brief, he has been very respectful about the club even after departing, which we saw when he returned as a Lille player.

Weah put his name in the history books with his goal against Real Madrid. He became the first American to score a goal at the Santiago Bernabeu in the Champions League.

Weah was not the only Celtic fan favourite involved in the game against Marseille and Real Madrid either. So was Matt O'Riley.

It was just last year that O'Riley left Celtic to join Brighton & Hove Albion. But after an injury-riddled debut campaign, he has made a loan move to Marseille. He had a decent game against Real Madrid as well. It was not his first taste of the Santiago Bernabue either, as he turned out for the Hoops against Los Blancos back in the Ange Postecoglou era.

Of course, Celtic might not have made the Champions League this season but they are in the Europa League. Their first game in the competition will be next week when they take on Red Star Belgrade.
