It is safe to say that Celtic need to make some quality signings in the upcoming transfer window. This is a squad that has stagnated. One could argue that that was the case throughout Brendan Rodgers' second spell at Parkhead, which is why things never took off and matched the heights of his first stint in Glasgow.

The need of the hour is to bring in some players who are capable of coming in and immediately making an impact in the first-team, establishing themselves as starters straight off the bat. Proven and experienced names are what the Hoops need.

But at the same time, they continue to be linked with talented youngsters as well. And it looks like they might be leading the race for one of them.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are optimistic that they can fend off competition to sign Michael Noonan from Shamrock Rovers. He has been linked with Manchester United. At the same time, Manchester City are said to hold a long-held interest in him.

We covered Celtic's interest in the player a few days ago. Now, it looks like things are moving in the right direction. He was a standout performer at the U-17 World Cup, scoring three goals in five games.

It remains to be seen if Celtic are indeed successful in signing the Irishman in the near future or not. They look like the frontrunners in this race but with the level of competition, you never know.

It is also worth pointing out that Noonan is not someone who is going help Celtic in the here and now. They need to sign some players who are capable of making their mark on the first-team right after joining the Hoops.
