'Celtic should've' - Chris Sutton can't believe Bhoys hesitancy over 'tremendous' target

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton thinks his old club might have missed their chance to land a winger who has just propelled himself to world fame.

The Bhoys are on a recruitment drive this summer, with Martin O'Neill believing significant spend is required to get this team back to being dominant in Scotland.

Celtic managed to win the double last season, but the league title was won by the skin of their teeth, and the feeling is that this team is capable of much more dominance.

Just could be on the list

Motherwell winger Elijah Just has been linked with a move to Celtic, and the links just went into overdrive after his brace at the World Cup. Just scored an impressive double as New Zealand drew with Iran in their group stage opener.

Just put New Zealand ahead on two occasions, but Iran battled back and grabbed what was, to their credit, a rather deserved draw.

Just is coming off the back of a Scottish Premiership season that saw him score seven and provide eight assists, which is an impressive winger return, and one that helped Motherwell finish in fourth place.

Celtic and Rangers have both been linked, but any hope of landing the winger on a cheap deal was likely ruined by his impressive start to the World Cup, and it could get worse if he continues to find the net.

“Celtic should’ve snapped Elijah Just up before now… now it could really cost them… tremendous performance from him," Sutton wrote on X.

Just's explosive start

Speaking to FIFA after the game, New Zealand and Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood said of Just:" Elijah is very good, he showed it all season for Motherwell and he stepped up to the plate today and scored two great goals and hopefully there will be many more in the World Cup campaign."

Just himself added: "It's very special. We've not been to too many World Cups so hopefully I am the first of many to score two or more. So the future is looking bright.

"I'll do my best to stay up there [in the Golden Boot race] but it's going to be tough! I'm just so happy that the team played well, we get one point on the board and we can look forward."

Just is currently valued at ÂŁ2.1million by Transfermarkt, but that value does not reflect his World Cup performance just yet.
