Celtic are now said to have agreed a deal to sign Joe Van den Berg as they look to address their midfield issues. The Bhoys are yet to replace star man Arne Engels, who joined West Ham on a £22million deal this summer.
Plenty of names have been linked with a move to Parkhead, but failure to qualify for the Champions League appeared to rule out a number of them, and many have now found new clubs elsewhere.
Van den Berg is a young talent, only 19 years of age, and he is a regular for the Netherlands' under-19s age group. The midfielder has made five senior appearances for PSV Eindhoven so far, while he has 34 appearances for the B team, which plays in the second division, scoring nine times from midfield.
Van den Berg actually started his career with Ajax as a youngster, eventually winding up at PSV following a stint with Vitesse.
Sky Sports now report that the Bhoys have struck a £3.4million deal with PSV for the signing of the midfielder, who expected to have his medical on Monday and sign ahead of Tuesday night's UEFA squad deadline.
The official Scottish deadline is not until 5pm the following day, but players signed after 11pm on Tuesday night will not be able to play in the Europa League until February.
Celtic's lack of midfield depth was exposed in the Champions League against LASK recently, with Mika Baur having struggled when asked to play a deeper role, then again, Van den Berg is of an attacking mould despite being a box-to-box midfielder, so that issue hasn't really been addressed with this signing.
Martin O'Neill could do with a second midfield signing, but whether he will get one with time running out out remains to be seen. Celtic's business has moved slowly this summer, but time is quickly running out.
