Jeremie Frimpong has completed his move to Liverpool. That is a move that has been in the works for a while and was widely expected to go through. The Dutchman had joined Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in early 2021, and to be very honest, he spent much longer there than expected, as he had been linked with the likes of FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and more for years now.
Frimpong will have his work cut out for him at Liverpool. He has been tasked with replacing a club legend, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving as a free agent to join Real Madrid. Let's see how well the Dutchman does in his place.
Frimpong's rise has certainly been a meteoric one. When he arrived at Celtic, from Manchester City, he was expected to be a part of the youth and developmental setup. Merely months later, he was a starter and has not looked back since.
A lot of Celtic fans are not happy with what has been said in Bayer Leverkusen's statement announcing Frimpong's move to Liverpool. According to translation, the club's Sporting Director Simon Rolfes said:
"Jérémie is a perfect example of the path that Bayer 04 Leverkusen has often followed successfully: bringing in a young and talented player from a small league, developing him into a high-performance footballer to achieve their own goals and thus making him interesting for the biggest European clubs."
Celtic disrespected in Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong announcement
It is safe to say that Celtic fans won't be happy to see the team being put in the 'small league' bracket. Frimpong achieved quite a bit at Parkhead before ever pulling on a Bayer Leverkusen jersey.
Not only did he get his first big break at Celtic but he won trophies with the Hoops. He also played against teams like AC Milan and Lille in Europe.
Also, let's take a look at this season's Champions League campaign to make a little comparison. Celtic were eliminated from the knockout phase by Bayern Munich, losing 3-2 on aggregate and nearly getting a win away at the Allianz Arena. On the other hand, Bayer Leverkusen lost 5-0 on aggregate against the Bavarians in the following round. Not bad for a team from a 'small league'.
