This is how Brendan Rodgers' story at Celtic ends. Let's be honest, nobody would have seen this coming. Yes, the Northern Irishman did see his side fall eight points behind Hearts in the title race. And a large section of the fanbase did want to see him depart. It simply was not working and had not for a while. That being said, it is almost unbelievable that he has resigned before the end of October.

The club did not sack him. But they announced on their official website that Rodgers had tendered his resignation today. It has been accepted by the club and he will leave his role with immediate effect.

We also know who will be replacing him in the hot seat for the time being. The club confirmed that the process to appoint a new permanent manager is underway but until then, Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic's first-team matters.

To be honest, it is a sad ending to the Parkhead career of a Celtic legend. He had seemed intent on seeing out his contract this time around, but clearly, he decided that the time had come for him to leave. Was it because he did not receive the backing of the board in the summer? Or is it simply because he feels that he is not up to the task after falling eight points behind and wants to step away?

Thank you for all the Celtic memories, Brendan

It has been one of the most fascinating Celtic careers ever, that is for sure. How the first stint ended was a headline story. Somehow, he has outdone it this time.

But at the end of the day, all we can do is thank him for all he has achieved with the club. Now, the time has come to move on.

A large section of the fanbase felt that it was time for a change. Rodgers has made that decision himself. He cannot be blamed for it. We wish him the best.
