With just a year left on his contract, many Celtic fans had thought that the club would do everything possible in this summer transfer window in order to show Brendan Rodgers that Parkhead is the place to be and convince him to sign an extension. We witnessed the exact opposite unfold. There were big-money exits and significant sell-on fees coming in, but barely a fraction of it was reinvested into the squad.

The finishing touch might have been allowing Adam Idah to leave on deadline day and then not signing a replacement. Instead, Kelechi Iheanacho was brought in as a free agent.

After what we witnessed over the course of the summer transfer window, it feels like Rodgers' chances of signing a contract extension at Celtic are slim to none. In fact, fans would not blame him if he decided to walk away at some point in the middle of the season. That's how bad the lack of ambition, efficiency and urgency has been.

In fact, Rodgers has been tipped to make a potential return to the Premier League. As reported by Football Insider, former Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness said:

"Brendan Rodgers and the fans are going to be asking serious questions about the board. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan suddenly throws the towel in and quits Celtic. I don’t think he’s that far away from thinking that.

“Once the Premier League merry-go-round starts to go, I think Brendan might be considered for another job. I wouldn’t be surprised if he jumped ship pretty quickly. The board will be left counting their money, and that’s not what the fans want to see."

Brendan Rodgers tipped to leave Celtic for Premier League club

We all know how Rodgers left Celtic during his first stint as manager to join Leicester City. That was a controversial move and he was not a popular figure amongst the fans in the aftermath. Things might be a bit different so many years on.

Of course, Rodgers has mentioned on a number of occasions in his second term that he plans to see out his entire contract. But the Northern Irishman could not have foreseen this summer transfer window. That is for sure. Not even the most pessimistic of Celtic supporters did.

It is very clear that the fans are not happy with the board after how the entire window was handled. And if Rodgers did choose to leave, it would be an understandable decision in the eyes of most.
