With Hearts winning this weekend once again, they are now five points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table. If someone had told you a few months back that that would happen, you'd probably have laughed it off. But here we are. Celtic have the chance to cut that gap down to two points when they take on Motherwell, but considering how toothless their recent performances have been, it would come as not surprise if they end up dropping points once again.
It is what it is though. One can only hope that the Hoops try to rectify their mistakes of the summer transfer window and spend big in January.
But if recent records are anything to go by, there is little chance of that happening. Scottish clubs rarely go out and spend big in January. That is the reality of the situation.
As reported by Football Insider, football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley said when talking about the situation of Celtic and the upcoming January transfer window:
"I think they’ll spend, I think it’s about how we define the levels of a big spend. It was a net spend of £7m this summer.
“In the January just gone Scottish clubs only spent £8million, and that was just Celtic. There was nobody else spending.
“So they’re not gonna spend huge amounts in January, because the market just doesn’t dictate that you can. The January window will always be lower than the summer.
“That said, I think you might see a little bit of investment following the board’s comments, yeah.
“And again, what I would say with that, things could change in the league, but history tells us that’s gonna be with an eye on preparing for the summer and Champions League qualification."
Brendan Rodgers won't be happy with Celtic's January transfer plans
Let's wait and watch how this situation actually plays out. Of course, it is worth pointing out that these are some rare times when it comes to Celtic and the relationship the fans have with the board.
Change has been demanded by the supporters for quite some time now. And the empty seats in the Europa League home opener against SC Braga would have spoken for themselves.
That being said, the club will surely want to make some investment in the January window to show the fans that they are serious about the club moving forward. Of course, after what we have seen unfold over the last several years when it comes to the Hoops' lack of ambition, you can never be too certain about what they will or won't do.
The ideal scenario would see them make some significant additions to this squad but it is pretty clear that they are not good enough, even domestically. Of course, a lot will depend on what the league table looks like come January.
