Things seem to be moving at a pace where it has become tough to keep up with all the rumours surrounding the club. According to the latest suggestions, they are trying to sign not one but two strikers this summer. A move for Shin Yamada of Kawasaki Frontale is believed to be getting closer. There has been a lot of talk about Napoli's Giuseppe Ambrosino over the past couple of days as well.
So, let's see how things play out for Celtic in these two striker transfer races. On the other hand, that raises questions about the future of some already at the club.
One of them is Johnny Kenny. After an excellent loan spell at Shamrock Rovers, he returned to Celtic in the second half of the campaign but barely featured, registering a goal and an assist in the limited game time he was provided.
Considering Celtic's interest in Yamada and Ambrosino, does Kenny have a future at Celtic? Well, if Brendan Rodgers' comments are anything to go by, he is still in the club's plans. As reported by The Scottish Sun, the manager said:
"I spoke to Johnny this morning about his plan.
"We’d really like him to sign another deal with Celtic and decide on what’s going to be best for his development, whether it’s to stay or if he needs another step to go out."
Brendan Rodgers confirms Celtic contract extension plan
There is no question that Kenny has talent. We saw that over his loan spell at Shamrock Rovers, for whom he scored 13 league goals in 29 appearances.
But is Kenny ready to be a regular contributor for Celtic at striker right now? The answer to that question is no. The Hoops have Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah, who combined for 53 goals last season even though the former mostly played as a winger and the latter was largely the cover option.
In fact, one has to wonder how much of an impact either Yamada or Ambrosino would make, if they were signed this summer. Most fans would prefer for the club to sign a proven goalscorer but that does not appear to be a part of their plans.
