Besiktas boss Vincenzo Italiano was not a happy man after Thursday night's Europa League defeat to Celtic.

The Turkish side came into the game as heavy favourites, both due to their significantly stronger squad and the fact they had picked up seven points in three games, while Celtic had failed to pick up any.

Besiktas took the lead in the game through a rebounded penalty just after half-time, and after falling behind to Callum Osmand and Camilo Durán goals, captain Orkun Kocku came off the bench, returning from injury, and scored a long range equaliser with five minutes remaining.

Still, Celtic managed to find a winner less than two minutes later, and that left Italiano and Besiktas with a bad taste in their mouths at full-time.

"I'm really sorry. I'm disappointed," Italiano said. "We played away against a good team, but we threw away a very important opportunity. We need to be as strong and aggressive as we were before. We gave away too many chances at the back and made mistakes. My players played well, but we needed to be more careful."

Asked about his side's defensive issues after also blowing a two-goal lead to draw over the weekend, he added: "I don't want to point fingers at anyone or blame anybody. At the beginning of the season, we were stronger and more solid defensively. We were more alert and anticipated danger much earlier.

"Of course, you are going to give away chances, but you cannot give away opportunities as cheaply as we did."

Italiano concluded: "Olaitan and the players out wide played very well. But I think we threw away the three points. That's why I'm very angry."

The criticism will be seen as fair by Italiano. Besiktas were solid at the back for much of the game but suddenly became far too open after Martin O'Neill made his three attacking changes on the hour-mark.

Osmand and Durán did well to exploit the opposition, but there were suddenly gaps in behind that simply were not there earlier in the game, and that's what will frustrate Italiano.

Not to mention Besiktas thought they had taken a point with a late equaliser, and they still found a way to lose the game, failing to close down Kieran Tierney for the long shot, and then Durán does well to bring it in and get the shot off, but no manager likes it when his team are the slowest to react to a second ball.
