Steven Gerrard was on his way to Ibrox. At least that is what the Rangers fans believed until news broke that the Liverpool legend had turned down the chance to return to the club with whom he won one trophy in three-plus years the first time around. It is safe to say that Celtic fans would have been pretty content to see him back in the hot seat as well.
As things stand, it is unclear who the Rangers will end up going for now that Gerrard is no longer an option. Over the last few days, the name of Danny Rohl has been doing the rounds as the frontrunner for the Ibrox job. It remains to be seen if that ends up materialising.
On the other hand, there is still not a lot of clarity about why Gerrard turned the job down. It has been claimed that he did not feel the timing was right to return to Ibrox.
Well, did it take him multiple meetings with the club to realise that. Or is there something else behind the scenes? It looks like there might be.
BBC share real reason Steven Gerrard rejected Rangers, Celtic fans react
Tom English wrote in his column for BBC regarding the Gerrard and Rangers situation:
"The 'timing' reason, it would appear, is strictly for those who came down in the last shower. It's understood that a reluctance to work under a sporting director (Kevin Thelwell) was one of Gerrard's main issues."
Well, it would have been nice to see what Gerrard could achieve this time around at Rangers. In fact, a lot of Celtic fans would have preferred that option because the last time around, when he left, he did so as a league champion. That is an ending they would like to change that.
Unfortunately, it is not going to be Gerrard who ends up getting the Rangers job this time around. Who will it be? We have to wait and see.
