Who will be the next manager of the Rangers? That is a question whose answer Celtic fans are eagerly awaiting as well. It is that time of the season after all. For four straight campaigns, the Ibrox club have made a sacking. Russell Martin joined a list that already included Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Mick Beale and Philippe Clement. Barry Ferguson had an interim spell but was not given the job permanently.

At some point, you have to wonder whether it is just about the manager. Surely you cannot get it wrong every time. And it looks like the Rangers have their eyes set on another of their former players this time around.

As reported by BBC Sport, discussions have taken place with Kevin Muscat, with some at Ibrox keen on his appointment. He has emerged as the favourite to take over.

But even if the appointment was made, Muscat would not be available until November 22, which is when the Chinese league season ends. There have been suggestions that Neil McCann could step in on an interim basis until then.

To be honest, Muscat is an interesting profile. He has a history of winning, having led teams to league titles in Australia, Japan and China. But then, a lot of Rangers fans seem to be happy enough to overlook his failures.

This would not be the first time that Muscat would get a top level job in Europe, if he does indeed land the Rangers role. He Sint-Truiden manager at one point but was sacked after winning just two of fourteen games in charge of the Belgian club.

For comparison, Clement had won the same league on three occasions. And we all know how things turned out for him at Ibrox.
