Celtic have been linked with a few big names in recent times. Christian Eriksen is one who comes to mind immediately, although they did not end up making a move for him eventually. They apparently even sounded out Jack Grealish this summer. Now, Raheem Sterling's name has been added to that list as well. The Englishman has worked previously with Brendan Rodgers, who was instrumental in his breakout at Liverpool. Could a reunion at Parkhead be on the cards?
Reports in the media have emerged suggesting that Rodgers is keen on a reunion with Sterling. And it has also been suggested that their previous connection, from their days at Liverpool, still holds weight.
One of the best players in the Premier League not too long ago, Sterling finds himself out of the first-team squad at Chelsea at the moment. He is completely out of Enzo Maresca's plans and training away from the group, having failed to complete a summer exit.
Sterling spent the previous season on loan at Arsenal and was expected to leave this summer, whether permanently or temporarily. Why did it not happen? Well, we now have an answer on that and it is not good news for Celtic's chances of signing him.
BBC drop major Raheem Sterling news amid Celtic rumours
As reported by BBC Sport, Chelsea presented Sterling with potential moves to Bayern Munich and Napoli over the summer. But the winger was keen to stay in the south of England so as not to uproot his family.
Has Sterling's stance changed merely weeks after the summer transfer window came to a close? It feels unlikely. But then again, a player's career is short and at 30 years of age, the Englishman surely won't be enjoying being frozen out.
So, all things considered, it does not feel like Celtic's chances of signing Sterling are particularly high. Even if Chelsea were open to the idea and ready to cover the majority of his salary, the player himself would have to agree to a move, which he might not.
