Celtic and Athletic Bilbao share a special relationship, which is no secret. Their fans were seen in attendance at Parkhead earlier in the season and then, Hoops flags were seen in the crowd at San Mames when they took on and eliminated the Rangers from the UEFA Europa League. Both sets of supporters must have been equally happy on that night.
James Forrest has another connection with Athletic Bilbao. He played his testimonial match against the La Liga club a couple of years back, which Celtic won by a 3-2 scoreline.
Forrest's name was in the headlines on Trophy Day as well, as he scored a late equaliser to salvage a draw for the Hoops. On the day, he also became the most decorated player in Celtic's history.
Athletic Bilbao made sure to send a classy message to Forrest on the day. They included a picture from the testimonial match as well.
Athletic Bilbao send classy message to Celtic player
it would be safe to say that Forrest has had quite the career at Celtic, spending the time entire time playing in the Hoops. A few years back, it had looked like that run was set to come to an end.
Forrest was dealing with constant injury problems and did not get a lot of playing time under the management of Ange Postecoglou or early on after Brendan Rodgers' return. He did not give up though and played a vital role in the Hoops' double last season with an impressive run of form in the second half of last season.
It ended up saving Forrest's Celtic career in many ways and now, it looks like there is a genuine chance that he could retire while still playing in the Hoops. By that point in time, he might add a few more trophies to his collection.
