Veteran goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has said he wants to join Celticj, but he knows time may have run out. The 39-year-old is now without a club after leaving Leicester City, and this summer may have been his best chance to land a move to the North.
Celtic needed a goalkeeper after Kasper Schmeichel departed, and Martin O'Neill was only in the market for a back-up keeper due to Viljami Sinisalo starting the season in very good form.
But in the end, they settled for signing Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone on a season-long loan deal, with the former England keeper having more tread on his tyres, still only 33 years of age.
Begovic, who has been linked with a move to Parkhead in the past, has now admitted he would have liked a move to Celtic to have panned out.
Begovic told Hajper: "Celtic definitely interested me. I've had some conversations in the past with both Celtic and Rangers, but unfortunately a move never materialised.
"There are many factors in making deals happen, but you can't ignore how big those two football clubs are in terms of tradition. I actually love the SPFL in general, it's a very competitive league and the intensity is always there.
"It’s something that we in England really relate to and respect. It never worked out, and while I think time is running out for that to happen, I have huge respect for both clubs, their tradition, and their history."
The veteran keeper has spent time at more clubs than most, spending time at 15 different teams during his long career, which is still not quite over, as he waits for an opportunity, likely at a club in need that has an injury issue over the coming weeks.
The peak of his career likely came at Stoke City, where he made 160 league appearances over four years and at AFC Bournemouth, where he made 107 appearances over four years. He also did pretty well at QPR recently, but he has since served in the back-up role Everton and Leicester City.
Celtic are not likely to be in the market for a goalkeeper any time soon unless they have an injury issue ahead of January.
