Aiden McGeady has decided to retire from the game at the age of 38, having enjoyed a career that lasted over two decades. It all begun at Celtic though. After coming through the club's academy ranks, he made his debut for the senior team in 2004. The Irishman did not take long to show his quality either, as he scored in that very game against Hearts.

There was no looking back after that for McGeady. He was playing regular football for Celtic from the following season.

Soon enough, he established himself as one of Celtic's best players and was even the best in Scotland at the top of his game. He would eventually leave in 2010 for a then Scottish record fee, after having made over 250 appearances for the Hoops and won seven trophies during that period of time as well.

Other than Celtic, McGeady played for a number of other clubs. But is quite clear that the Hoops and their supporters were special to him.

McGeady has sent an emotional message to Celtic and the fans in the statement announcing his retirement from the game. As reported by the Irish Mirror, he wrote:

"There are so many memories, too many to mention but getting to pull on the famous green and white Celtic jersey, the team I supported, was extremely special. Playing in the Champions League and individual honours I received there in front of those amazing fans are some of the most memorable moments of my life."

Celtic fans will have a lot of happy memories from McGeady's time at the club as well. There were plenty of occasions when he was even linked with a return to Parkhead, especially when he was at Everton.

Unfortunately, a return did not happen. He probably would have done a decent job for Celtic if he did make the comeback to Parkhead but it was not to be. McGeady did finish his career in Scotland though. His last club proved to be Ayr United. Before that, he was playing for Hibernian in the Premiership.
