The winter transfer window is turning out to be one to forget for Celtic fans. After how bad things were in the summer, the supporters had hoped that the board had learned some lessons and would improve this time around. The need for it is clear as well, as the Hoops find themselves six points behind Hearts and two adrift of the Rangers in the title race.
But once again, there has been a lack of efficiency in the transfer market. That is what you have to call it because the message coming out of the club is that there has been no lack of effort in trying to get deals done.
Yet, while clubs all around Europe are completing deals left, right and centre, the best Celtic have managed is a couple of loan signings. That is not good enough. Not even close. Yet, expect things to continue in this manner.
Earlier this month, TEAMtalk had reported that Celtic were strongly considering a move for forgotten Manchester City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega. On paper, that makes sense as Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo have both struggled lately. Unfortunately, another of the Hoops' transfer plans has now collapsed right in front of our eyes.
'Agreed a deal' - Sky Sports confirm news, Celtic plan collapses
As reported by Sky Sports News, Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign Ortega from Manchester City. The deal buys him out of the last six months of his contract for a fee that could reach £500,000.
Ortega is proven in the Premier League and at 33 years of age, should have a decent bit left in the tank. So, someone like him could have been a solid addition to this Celtic team. Now, they must turn their attention elsewhere.
Right now, it feels unlikely that Celtic will strengthen in goal this winter. Of course, the thought of Schmeichel carrying on in the number one role, despite his poor performances, is a scary one for many supporters.
