The Celtic squad could undergo some changes in the upcoming January transfer window. Brendan Rodgers appears to have way too many players available to him right now and has not been able to give game time to a number of them. So, expect more to head out of Parkhead rather than arrive in the winter.

One area of the pitch where Celtic are absolutely stacked at the moment is centre-back. Options there had looked slim in the summer due to injuries but now, that most of the defenders are available, it has become pretty difficult to get into the team.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales are the regular starting duo at centre-back as of now. On the other hand, the club shelled out combined transfer fees of around €8.5 million to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki in the summer. Stephen Welsh was handed a long-term extension not too long ago. And Tomoki Iwata can play there as well.

Nat Phillips is on loan from Liverpool and is expected to return to Anfield in January. Yuki Kobayashi looks set to join him out of the exit door as well and leave.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Kobayashi is preparing to return to Japan in January. The defender is poised to exit on loan. He would be keen on a return to Vissel Kobe but a number of J League clubs are eyeing him.

Kobayashi played a decent bit of football towards the end of last season but was not really able to impress. And this season, he has been completely out of the first-team picture. So, leaving on loan makes sense for all parties involved.

A good loan spell can change the course of a player’s career. Just look at how things have turned out for Scales.
