Celtic have a pretty sizeable squad at this point. Many feel that there are too many players for Brendan Rodgers to give enough playing time to everybody. Naturally, there are quite a few who are struggling to get into the team and there is speculation over their future. And it is expected that some will head out in January.

One of the players who does not seem to be a major part of Brendan Rodgers’ plans is Mikey Johnston. The winger has been one of the biggest ‘What if’ stories in recent Celtic history.

Johnston was one of the most highly-rated players while coming through the ranks at Celtic. He impressed when he broke into the first-team picture as well and there were many who predicted that he would go on to develop into a 20-goal-a-season winger.

But then, Johnston started to struggle with injuries and has never really recovered his old form. He spent the past season on loan at Vitoria SC and showed flashes of his quality. Now back at Celtic, he has made just one appearance in this campaign so far. And he has not been helped by the fact that he got injured early in the season.

It seems like Johnston’s future is up in the air. As reported by The Scottish Sun, he said:

"“Yep, definitely. No player is going to be happy when they’re not playing. Ultimately, it’s up to me and I need to try and force my way into that team.“I have until January to do that and I will try and give it everything to do that, but we just have to see what happens.”"

With Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada both out injured for the foreseeable future, and Marco Tilio yet to play a single minute of football for Celtic, there might be an opening for Johnston to get some minutes over the coming weeks. Let’s see how things play out.

If Johnston does not get playing time even under these circumstances, then the writing would be on the wall. In that case, leaving in January would be best for all parties involved.
