Celtic have signed a number of players from the Premier League over the years. In fact, before their recent transformation of the transfer policy following the arrival of Ange Postecoglou in the summer of 2021, the Hoops would often look towards the English top flight to find solutions to their problems.
Of course, it is almost impossible for Celtic to sign top Premier League players. But the Hoops would often bring in those towards the end of their careers or struggling for regular game time, whether permanently or on a loan deal.
It looks like Danny Simpson is someone who came close to joining Celtic. A move failed to materialise in the end though and we never got to see him in the Hoops.
As reported by TBR Football, Simpson said while speaking on the Filthy Fellas:
"“Celtic was on the cards, it was on the table, I spoke to Neil Lennon and everything, it was European football, more trophies, I spoke to Kolo Toure and Brendan about it, that fell through at the end when it was all done, that fell through.”"
Premier League winner admits he was close to joining Celtic
Of course, Simpson played for a number of English clubs through the course of his career and he came through the youth ranks at Manchester United, although he never quite made it at Old Trafford. He is best known for his time at Leicester City though.
He was part of Leicester City’s iconic team who defied all odds and managed to win the Premier League. It was an achievement that literally not even their biggest fan would have dreamed of at the start of that campaign. One of the greatest achievements in the history of sports, which might never end up being repeated, to be honest.
It looks like a move to Celtic was a possibility while Lennon was the manager of the club. Simpson has not done much of significance since leaving Leicester City though. He had short spells at Huddersfield Town and Bristol City and finds himself without a club at this moment.
