Brendan Rodgers returned for a second stint as Celtic manager in the summer, much earlier than anybody would have expected. It was a little over four years ago that he had left the club in the middle of the 2018/19 season in order to join Leicester City. He was welcomed back with open arms though as there was a recognition that he was the best option available following the departure of Ange Postcoglou for Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodgers has done a decent, if not great, job since coming in. Quite a few players have certainly been helped by his appointment.

None more so than Liam Scales. The Irishman was sent out on loan to Aberdeen last season and there was an expectation that he would leave the club on a permanent basis this summer. But with several centre-backs getting injured at the same time, an exit did not materialise.

Instead, it opened up an opportunity for Scales to come into the starting XI. And he took it with both hands. Most fans would have expected it to be a short-term thing but following a series of impressive performances, he looks like a nailed-on starter for the Hoops now.

As reported by the Daily Record, Rodgers is keen to see Scales rewarded and the Celtic manager said:

"“I think it’s something that I’m sure the club and his representative will look at.“It doesn’t sit with me so well when players are going down to the final stages of their contracts. I think you only need to look at the fact that I’ve chosen him to play very consistently in games. There are also players back now fit that are pushing him but he’s still performing to a high level. As I said to him, it’s about consistency. Keep showing that you can be consistent and stay focused. But there’s no doubt that he’s stepped in and done really well.”"

Scales has a contract that runs out in the summer of 2025. Thus, while there are still almost two years left in his deal, one would hope that the Hoops are able to agree an extension with him soon. He has certainly earned it with his performances.

Celtic have been very active when it comes to handing out extensions since the return of Rodgers in the summer. Scales should be next in line to extend his stay at Parkhead.
