Celtic find themselves in an interesting situation right now. With quite a few key starters out injured, it is unclear what their strongest starting XI is at this point in time. One area which seems to be up in the air is midfield, as Reo Hatate is expected to remain on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

While Matt O’Riley and Callum McGregor seem to be automatic starters, the third spot is up for grabs. David Turnbull, Odin Thiago Holm and Paulo Bernardo have all been handed starts in recent games as Brendan Rodgers gets a look at the options available to him.

Out of the three, one feels like Turnbull might be leading the race. He just brings a goalscoring ability that the other midfielders do not.

Turnbull was on the scoresheet against Aberdeen as well. He has scored 6 goals already this season, overtaking his tally from the previous campaign.

While Turnbull is excellent in certain aspects, there are other areas where he needs to improve. As reported by TBR Football, Chris Sutton said on Sky Sports:

"“He’s so good isn’t he? His timing of the run in the box. There are just other areas of his game which he really needs to improve on.“And at his age, it’s whether that’s really possible.”"

It will be interesting to see if Turnbull is able to get regular playing time when everyone is fit and available. But it must be said that he has only boosted his chances with his contributions over the last few games.

His contract situation is of interest as well. His current deal runs out next summer. And it is believed that the club are open to handing him a new deal, but it is now up to the player and what he wants to do.

Despite his solid displays, it feels unlikely that Turnbull would get regular starts when Hatate, O’Riley and McGregor are all available for selection. Would he be happy to continue playing a cover role?
