It is no secret that Celtic could do with another goalkeeper. Joe Hart will turn 37 years of age before this season comes to an end and while the Englishman has done a very decent job since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2021, a lot of questions have been raised about his performances in recent times.
Celtic have been linked with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher and Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin lately as potential transfer targets for next summer or possibly earlier. Two high-profile names for sure.
At the same time, signing those players would not be simple. Several other clubs are expected to be interested if they did end up leaving their current teams in the near future. Thus, Celtic must have alternative targets as well.
One name that the club should consider is that of Koen Casteels. He currently plays for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga and has represented the Belgian national team on quite a few occasions as well.
Celtic must sign €8 million goalkeeper for free next summer
Casteels is a top-quality goalkeeper. So much so that he was linked with a potential move to Bayern Munich not too long ago.
Yes, he is 31 years of age. But then, that is around the time that goalkeepers enter their prime. And if Celtic do sign him, he could potentially be their number one for the next half a decade to come.
Of course, one also has to mention that Casteels’ current deal with Wolfsburg is set to run out at the end of the current season. So, if he does not end up extending his deal, he will be available as a free agent next summer.
That might be the perfect opportunity for Celtic to make a move for the €8 million-rated goalkeeper. Interestingly, there were rumours this summer that Casteels wanted to leave Wolfsburg.
