Celtic have been very active following the appointment of Brendan Rodgers when it comes to handing out contract extensions. Key players like Callum McGregor, Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate, Kyogo and Daizen Maeda have all agreed to new deals. Even someone like Stephen Welsh, who most expected to leave in the summer, has gotten himself a new deal.

There is also speculation that a few others could put pen to paper on extensions soon. One whose current contract runs out next summer is David Turnbull.

The Scottish midfielder has struggled for a regular place in the Celtic starting XI during his time at Parkhead, having joined in the summer of 2020 from Motherwell. He has grown in importance this season though and has found some decent bit of form as well.

Of course, that might very well have drawn interest from clubs down south. As reported by TBR Football, Andy Walker said on The Go Radio Football Show:

"“I like Turnbull. I think it’s really interesting that his contract is up at the end of the year. I hope he can, if he wants to, stay in Scottish football, if he’s still wants to take part in Champions League games.“But I understand that he’ll be an attractive guy for some of the clubs down in England who’ve got a bit of money to spend.“I’m sure he’ll have options. What you’ve seen from him is something a bit different for Celtic. A guy that can score from outside the box and that has been priceless in the last couple of games.”"

Even though Turnbull has been playing some very good football lately, when everybody is fit and available, one would not think that he would be a starter for the club. Celtic’s best three midfielders at the moment are O’Riley, Hatate and McGregor.

Also, the fact that Turnbull was left out of the starting XI against Atletico Madrid would have been viewed as a blow by many. He had scored in the previous two games and yet found himself on the bench while Paulo Bernardo was handed a start.

Turnbull does have the unique ability of scoring consistently from the middle of the park though and that could certainly draw the interest of many clubs in England, whether in the Champions League or in the bottom half of the Premier League. So, will the Scot sign a new deal with Celtic or depart?
