Celtic fans were not delighted with the club’s transfer strategy over the summer. The Hoops focused on bringing in highly-rated youngsters to Parkhead rather than adding established and experienced players to the squad. The fear was that they would not be able to compete in the Champions League once again this season, as a number of them were not ready to play at that level, and that is exactly what has happened.
Celtic find themselves at the bottom of their Champions League group after four games with very little chance of moving up. Their latest effort in the competition was a 6-0 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
Admittedly, Celtic have enjoyed a lot of success in domestic competitions in recent years. But if they are to truly progress in Europe, they will need to change their transfer strategy.
One of the most high-profile names they have been linked with is Andriy Lunin. And there seems to be a positive update regarding his future.
£12 million Celtic target’s wife admits they are ready to move
As tweeted out by Madrid Xtra, Lunin’s wife Anastasia was asked on Instagram:
"“What are Lunin’s plans? Has he planned to leave or he will stay in Madrid?”"
She said:
"“If there is a club that will let him play I think we will leave. If there is a club where he will be allowed to play then of course we are ready to move.”"
Lunin found himself in the spotlight in midweek. After Kepa Arrizabalaga got injured during the warm-up, he replaced the Spaniard in the starting XI. And he justified his place in the team by saving a penalty and keeping a clean sheet. Now, it remains to be seen if he is given more chances to play moving forward.
His current deal with Real Madrid is set to run out at the end of this season. Thus, he will be available as a free agent next summer and an extension with the Spanish club looks unlikely at this point. Of course, Celtic are not the only club believed to hold an interest in the 24-year-old goalkeeper.
