Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher makes Celtic claim
Celtic fans were left very disappointed with the club’s 6-0 defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. Even though they were down to ten men for the majority of the match, with Daizen Maeda being sent off in the first half, that is not an acceptable scoreline for the Hoops.
Unfortunately, it is not the first time that Celtic have suffered a heavy defeat in the Champions League under the management of Brendan Rodgers. Fans with a keen memory will remember the losses at the hands of Barcelona and PSG during the Northern Irishman’s first stint at Parkhead.
That being said, it is important to take this result in isolation. Rodgers’ side cannot let this defeat affect their season negatively.
Jamie Carragher has given a very honest and clear assessment of how the game between Celtic and Atletico Madrid unfolded though. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, the Liverpool legend told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (07/11/23 at 10:55 pm):
"“Let’s not forget Celtic were down to ten, so it was always going to be a tough night for them.“It was about Celtic trying to keep the score down, they just couldn’t.“The problem they (Atletico Madrid) had is they dropped points against Celtic (in the 2-2 draw), nobody had dropped points against Celtic up until now. They played them twice, so it was vital that they got four points out of the six against Celtic.“Now, they better hope that Celtic can maybe take points off someone else in the last couple of games and they do their own job as well (to progress).”"

Even while down to ten men, should Celtic have done better against Atletico Madrid than they did in the Spanish capital? Yes.
But then, this was always going to be a difficult game. And one has to remember that a lot of these players do not have much experience of playing at this level. When the third goal went in, they just seemed to let their shoulders drop and the scoreline ended up at 6-0.
That makes the game seem completely one-sided and it was that way for the most part. But the Hoops were very much in it until Maeda was given his marching orders in a controversial red card decision to say the very least.
Hopefully, Rodgers’ side will take their lessons from this game and come back stronger. They have two matches left in the Champions League group stage this season. Progression, and even finishing third, seems pretty much impossible. But results like this cannot be repeated no matter what.
