It wasn’t a good night at all for Celtic supporters. A disappointing result against Atletico Madrid in the Spanish capital on Tuesday left us all feeling low. While the fans speculate over what is needed to step up the club’s Champions League results, they would not have been happy with one former Tottenham Hotspur player’s view on the matter.

Of course, the 6-0 loss to Atletico Madrid raised all sorts of questions. And all sorts of takes from the media as well as opposition fans as well.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player in question is Jamie O’Hara. And he raised the question of whether the Hoops should even be playing in the Champions League.

While talking on talkSPORT, O’Hara said:

"“Is there any point in Celtic being in the Champions League? They’re not improving.”"

It wasn’t a good showing from Celtic after the controversial red card for Daizen Maeda. That part is true, but the Hoops were very much up against a top-quality side, who many others in the competition would struggle against.

Fortunately, Alan Brazil was quick to defend Celtic. As reported by TBR Football, he said while talking on talkSPORT:

"“I think they are getting better because in the home games they were a little bit unlucky by the way! You have to watch them, Jamie, again.”"

That’s one of the hopes the fans will be holding on to. Signs of improvement were there in earlier matches. Two more Champions League games this season still leave a glimmer of hope. Admittedly that’s more about getting a good result than progression in the contest.

Despite the doom and gloom surrounding the Madrid result those hopes need not be forlorn. Celtic may need a bit of luck, the wind in the right direction and a decent referee, but points and maybe a win are still possible.

Of course, if the club are to make any real progress in the Champions League, a lot of things need to improve. Whether it be their recruitment or their game management against top teams.
