Celtic might not be flying at the moment but there is quite a bit of positivity around the club and a feeling that things are only going to get better as the season progresses. The players seem to be still coming to grips with Brendan Rodgers’ style of football. Several of them arrived in the summer as well and need some time to adjust to life and the pressures of Parkhead.

There are some players who seem to have benefited from the arrival of Rodgers as manager. One of them is David Turnbull.

The Scottish midfielder had been struggling for consistent playing time while Ange Postecoglou was the manager of the club but is seeing more of the pitch now. He is also scoring consistently and that will only enhance his chances of getting more opportunities in the future.

Turnbull’s current deal runs out next summer and there has been talk of a potential extension in the media lately. But amidst all that, he has been told to consider a possible exit as well.

As reported by TBR Football, Barry Ferguson said on The Go Radio Football Show:

"“I think he’s got a decision to make come January or even next summer. I think he’s got real quality.“If he’s got ambitions to break back into that Scotland squad he needs to be playing week in, week out.“I just believe if everybody’s fit in that midfield area the strongest three is obviously McGregor, O’Riley and Hatate and I just think he’ll be coming off the bench more than he would be starting.“So I think it’s going to be a big decision that David’s going to be having to make. And whether that’s going down to England or going abroad maybe, if he’s got any ambitions to get back into that Scotland squad he’s going to need to play on a regular basis.”"

Turnbull is certainly only increasing his chances of getting back into the national team picture at the moment with his displays for Celtic. But at the same time, one can see Ferguson’s point as well.

Turnbull had dropped out of the starting XI when Reo Hatate was available and has only gotten back in with the Japanese midfielder out on the sidelines. When everybody is fit and available, he does not feel like a regular starter for the Hoops but rather a squad player. Of course, that can change if he is able to consistently deliver goals like he has so far this season.
