Celtic have been very active in recent months when it comes to handing out contract extensions. The likes of Kyogo, Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate, Daizen Maeda and several others have put pen to paper on new deals since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers as manager. And it looks like the club are open to handing a deal to another one of their players.

Hatate’s recent injury came as a major blow for Celtic. The Japanese midfielder was finally starting to find his form and rhythm but is now set to remain out for the foreseeable future.

It does give an opportunity to others to show what they are capable of. And one player who appears to be making the most of that chance is David Turnbull, who has scored in both of the previous two games.

Turnbull’s current contract is set to run out next summer. And judging from Rodgers’ comments, the club are ready to hand him a new one, but the ball is in the midfielder’s court.

As reported by the Daily Record, Rodgers said about the situation of Turnbull:

"“David is a player we would like to keep, so it is not us here on the club side.“He has to do what he thinks is right for himself. At this moment of time, he is still in the last year of his contract. Unless something changes, it is just a case of as long as the players are giving their all. It only becomes a problem if I don’t see the intensity that I want, the mentality that I want. That’s always something I am mindful of with players in the last year of their contracts. You have to be right on it or otherwise you can drift very easily, and think about other things. As a manager I won’t let that happen no matter how good anyone is.”"

When everybody is fit and available, Turnbull is probably not someone who would be a regular starter. But at the same time, he is someone who is more than good enough to have a role in the team.

Turnbull has something that not many other Celtic midfielders do, and that is the ability to score from midfield. He already has four goals to his name this season despite being in and out of the team.

He had also scored 15 goals in a single Premiership campaign during his time at Motherwell. Thus, Turnbull is someone who certainly knows his way to the back of the net. Now, let’s see if he ends up signing a contract extension.
